When I first read about the assignment to begin building an ePortfolio, I can honestly say I had no idea what to expect. I liked the prospect of having a professional portfolio that I could create to display my work, as well as give a glimpse of myself to viewers through personal touches within the pages. I feel the ePortfolio represents my ability to combine my professional skills with my creative flare, and it will continue to display my writing abilities with projects and blog entries to come over time. The separate resume, blog, and projects tabs give a complete beginning picture as to my capabilities and commitment.
The most challenging aspect of the ePortfolio is trying to decide how to appropriately showcase my projects or works in a manner that compliments the vision I have within these pages. Similar to so many, I want my talent to pop off of the pages, so to speak, but I also wish to be relatable on some level to those who view it for various reasons. I encourage anyone who is considering creating one to discover the reason behind having a portfolio beyond putting up a resume and displaying a few pieces of work. One common saying I have heard in my professional experience is that a person desires to see more of whom they are reading than what they are reading.
I have learned quite a lot in the COMM 323 class of Leadership and Events Management this semester. Being able to apply what I have been studying with my love of the arts has made this semester special for me. As I reflect on what we covered within the leadership aspect of the class, I think the styles of leadership was an easy one to relate to and decide on where I fall into these categories. The personality factors I recognized within myself are extraversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness, and I agree with Professor L. when she stated, “there is a strong relationship btw the ‘Big 5’ and being perceived as an effective leader” (Lietzenmayer, 2016, p. 3). It is because I possess certain characteristics and because that I am a leader at the moment that I feel that the authentic approach to leadership would best compliment my personal communication skills and professional goals. The need to be transparent, supportive, balanced, and effective, because of what I am doing at the moment is truly a team effort, creates the perfect opportunity to use the authentic approach.
I consider flexibility and two-way communication both in a leader as great assets, and the fact that I am learning as I am growing and sharing that knowledge with others compliments the fact that my team and I affect on another. I hope to remember that I will continue to grow in my skills as a leader and to use these skills to create other strong leaders within my team. Acknowledging my characteristics enables me to utilize certain styles over others, but the knowledge of these other styles will be useful if ever I find myself in a situation that demands of their appropriate use within a leadership position.
I think in managing events, my leadership style will continuously consist of an authentic style of leadership, possibly with the use of a situational approach, depending on the circumstances. Within the arts community, building relationships is vital because it is not always a large community within a city. There is much more use of several leaders at once who must be able to work together and communicate effectively with their team. Within my business, I recently witnessed how a supportive network of leaders communicating with other leaders and their teams can accomplish great things. I witnessed the ability of leaders and team members to share and follow one another in an effort to create success for all.
I do not think my view of communication is any different than when I began this course. I knew there was still much for me to learn and expand upon, and this class furthered the knowledge I have gained since I began the journey to obtain a degree within this field. I certainly have a better understanding of the different types of events and what makes them a success, and I have a stronger appreciation for the different types of leaders that are useful or a must within particular situations or job roles. This course absolutely helped me to further my recognition of the personal I am, what I wish to accomplish, and the leader I desire to be toward others.
